Teddy Bear hat

I thought my despicable me hat was looking a little worn and decided I needed a brand shiny new 2013/2014 hat. And yes, I do have dozens of hats already but I wanted a day to day not *too* silly hat that I can turn up to work in and still retain the dignity (ahem) with which my peers regard me.

I think I failed in that.

It is really warm though!

All the Mikes and some hats

So, here it is. The maxi mini Mike hat.

To clarify:
Mike = Mike Actual
Mini mike = finger puppet mike
Maxi Mini mike = Massive finger puppet mike as hat for Mike Actual.

Mini mike came first, made last year, and I am not sure of the exact moment when I decided Mike actual needed an oversized hand hat - it feels like I have always wanted to make it, but whenever it came about - here it is.

Brim is a bit twisted here, but you get the idea. What amused me was that Mike was terribly upset that both he and mini mike had a beer (see the guinness in his hand) and maxi mini didn't. We decided if he got drunk he had the furthest to fall.

Now, I made this pretty quickly the night before the hat competition, and I winged it somewhat, so it is far from perfect, eyes too big, ears too small. But this is a Doctor Whoovesesque 11th. Next time I am going to do it properly with the right material etc and make a Tom Baker MLP hat.
Poppy's pro tip: don't wear a Dr Whooves hat in the company of numerous bronies.

Hourglass cutie mark.

And, you've seen it before, but as it won second prize (jointly with maxi mini mike) you'll jolly well see it again.

Despicable Me and a fluffy wampa

A Despicable Me hat, for the father. In retrospect I think the flaps should have been blue to mimic the dungarees but never mind.

Wampa keyring, just because!

I was going to add teeth/blood to his mouth, but I rather liked that it looked more like a mustache than an angry mouth.

Smurfette v. Daleks

I'm so meta even my hats have hats.

Here's my dalek hat front on. Of course, the eye stalk has been made to look more like the sinkplunger arm. This is the only way I could make it not-a-penis-hat

Got to say though, it is a comfortable snuggly hat, it comes right down to your eyebrows, and cups your ears in fleecy warmth.
Side view of the flaps for ya.

Apron, piggies, poo and a hat

I am usually the secretest of all secret Santas, but I suspect the recipient may have had something of an inkling it was me (I told her). So this braai themed apron will surprise no one. Also, I can now pronounce Boerewors.
Little silliness. I've been playing with felting. So there is a little Cobweb sniffing Winks, a scottish boy piggy we've never met.
I have had sooo much fun making this felt, fleece and pompom bristol stool chart. Numbers 1 and 2 are stuffed really tight so they are really firm whereas 5 is all soft and fluffy edged. Number 3 is my favorite.
Happy wampa hat for a baby.

A hat and a cat

Unfortunately, some of the things I have been working on you can't see because Santa has sworn me to secrecy for a couple of weeks more. So, in the meantime, here's some bits and bobs.

I made a baby viking hat for a small scottish chappy. It was hard as I didn't have a head model to put it on so I hope it fits and he likes it and everything.

And because you can't really see the stitching on the grey, here it is before I added the details to the horns

Last night I was going to carry on making the Top Secret Thing that I am working on, but my sewing machine kept bunging up, and it was cold and I didn't have any coke so I decided to sulk. So I made something not even remotely on my to do list. Here's a bit I cut out, can you tell what it is yet?

Filthy minds! It is a  cute little cat pin cushion.

A few more things are on the go, so watch this space.

Birthday hats

I decided to make people wear my hats on my birthday [foot stamp - I'm the birthday girl, you *have* to wear this ridiculous hat].

But then... you know, the panic. What if there aren't enough?? What if people leave the pub thinking "hmm... ok evening, but I COULD HAVE DONE WITH MORE POMPOMS?!"
So, I made a couple more.

(Pictures of hats in action here)

There have many discussions as to whether to sew the mask into place so that it can't be pulled down. I'm thinking I will. I may even add eyes.

Same thing we do every night...

Red fraggle. The most annoying of all fraggles. With the possible exception of mooki. That bloody sack-wearing hippy fraggle - I could totally take a pair of scissors to her stitching!

Boba Felt and Kermit the Fett

The main reason I bought all that fleece back in June was to make hats and from the very beginning I knew I would have to make a Boba Fett balaclava.

so, here you go; Boba Felt.

(The black is see-through to the wearer, being made of a couple of layers of black netting. In the next picture I used a flash, so you see where my face is)

And because it had taken so long to get round to making him, I pushed out the boat and made two. Here is the second one. But I wanted to be a bit different, so, I give you... Boba Frog. You know, if under the mask it was atually Kermit. And the good new is I can wear it with my Kermit outfit - you know - if so I wish!!

Another assortment of hats

I can't believe it has been nigh on a month since last I posted. It doesn't feel like I've been twiddling my thumbs doing nothing. Perhaps I was just too excited about seeing penguins and going to the Browncoats' Shindig. Anyway, I could claim that I have been making these for the past month but I actually only started them all last week. There are two more to come* but I wanted to post something now and they aren't ready. Plus they are a bit... different so probably deserve a post of their own. Maybe even this evening.

Anyway, make the most of these, as I think I may be done with hats for a while after this batch. I feel my coke cans and pumpkins calling me.

Princess Bubblegum has short hair here, young Peebles perhaps? Either way I just thought this would be cool in that it has built in ear flaps. If I was to make another one I would obviously make a shorter crown. Not sure why I thought it needed to be quite so tall!
(Also - just noticed I left a needle in her jewel. That isn't part of it really!)

I've seen a few Finn hats** floating around the internet. But with all of them, the bottom strap went under the chin. I suppose that would probably be accurate if Finn were a real human, but I wanted to get that block-head sort of look, I mean you can't really see his chin in the cartoon if he looks sideways.

Many of you will have already seen me around sporting these two little puffs of nonsense.
The first is a minion from Despicable Me. A film I really must get round to watching some time. And of course, the second is a bird who is angry, he is a character in some game or other.

* three actually, I also made a Cartman hat but it wasn't very exciting and is with the recipient now, perhaps you will get to see it if said person gets proper Cartmanned-up - possibly for Hallowe'en.

Ludo hat

More silliness from Labyrinth

This here is a whole heap of eyes

Ludo ... fwend

And a better photo of the ears, not that they are particularly exciting

Wampa hats

*Two* wampa hats! One with ear flap/paws and one plain one. I did of course consider making one of the paws detachable but it would have been funny rather than practical.

Why do I always get that crazed look in my eyes when I point a camera at myself?

This is the first one I made.

And this one is for shop girl. I made the hat a little bit on the short side, so the flaps are to keep the ears warm. And for added daw-ness. Oh I also gave this chap a sparkle in his eye!

There we go - much better on the dummy. He kind of looks wistful here.
Here's what the paws and claws look like.

Melancholy dragon hat

No more hats for a few days, I promise

How I managed to make my dragon look so melancholy I have no idea. I was going for ferocious.

I think he is sad because he has such a big nose and the lady dragons don't fancy him.
And, lest you were worried that I didn't go over the top, here is the back. After having test-driven it, I think that a pair of legs need to be added, to counterbalance the tail and nose, it is a bit see saw-y at the moment.

A Brain Slug Fascinator

Never got the point of fascinators, but here's one I can really get behind. A brain slug fascinator.

As I am sure you are all aware, the brain slug is from Futurama.

Another Murloc Hat

Can you guys believe that less than 6 short weeks ago I didn't own a single murloc hat?

There is a good reason for this one. My mum wanted to borrow my murloc hat for when she goes to rugby matches (apparently silly hats are the norm) so seeing as dad got an early homemade birthday present in the form of the kindle cover I thought it only fair that she gets a very early present, in the form of a murloc hat in the Harlequins colour scheme, which is her team of choice. It is quite hard to tell the light blue from the grey in that picture, so this one may help. As you can see, I finished this off on a messy table, with a glass of wine, and Mary Poppins on in the background. Spit spot.

Day Thirty one - Macaroni penguin hat

Last week someone asked me to make a 'silly' penguin hat for them. So, my immediate thought was of those shaman headdresses, with the animal pelt down the back and the coyote skull resplendent above the forehead. I really wanted to do a penguin version of that. I'll admit, I spent quite a bit of time imagining what a penguin would look like skinned (as an aside, I can't believe no one makes penguin-skin rugs, not even with fake penguins).

I'm afraid the hat came off less shaman, and more novelty headwear from the gift shop at Penguin World. Have a look at what I mean.

Looking at the underside of the skinned penguin..

This is a hat that just screams nonchalence.

A side view, sort of. I did consider doing a panoramic video like with the murloc hat, but wasn't sure the internet would be able to handle more than one dose of such photogenic awesomeness.

One of the funny things about this hat (unintentionally) is that if a slighter taller person looks at the hat wearer, it can actually look like they have a penguin head. See, here's me and Ronnie demonstrating.

The white 'brim' of the hat has been double felted to make it stiffer, and it just feels like a floppy summer hat, albeit with a penguin on top. I like the brim.  Not sure how it will fare on the larger head of the intended hat receiver though.
